Pre-CSAA Chinese Studies Postgraduate Forum

In June 2005, the Chinese Studies Research Group at the University of Melbourne hosted a pre-CSAA 2005 postgraduate forum. The Forum brought together Chinese Studies postgraduates from interstate and New Zealand as well as Australia's leading Sinologists, including Professor Geremie Barme, Dr Antonia Finnane, Dr Gloria Davies, Professor David Holm and Dr Luigi Tomba. Alex English, President of the Chinese Studies Postgraduate Group had written a report on the Forum - Finding an Intellectual Community: the inaugural pre-CSAA Chinese Studies Postgraduate Forum. The report is also published elsewhere in this issue of EALRGA Newsletter.

You are welcome to view the conference photos at the Forum home page: www.lib.unimelb.edu.au/collections/asian/CSRG/ResearchDayjun05.html

Unicode conversion at the University of Melbourne

The INNOPAC library system which currently underpins the Kinetica CJK Service is going to be decommissioned, and the CJK database will be amalgamated with the Australian National Bibliographic Database (ANBD). The CJK codes in INNOPAC, the University of Melbourne's library system are EACC/CCCIII. To exchange data from the new Kinetica which is fully Unicode compliant, the University of Melbourne is in the process of converting current CJK EACC and CCCII codes to Unicode in INNOPAC. The conversion is scheduled on 22nd November 2005.

We are also exploring the CJK cataloguing workflow under the new Kinetica environment and find out which is the most efficient way to meet VU's need when the new Kinetica System is available.

National Library Asia Research Forum

I attended the Asia Research Forum organised by the National Library on 24th of October. It was a very fruitful and successful Forum providing an opportunity for academics and Librarians working in Asian Studies to dialogue. Academics addressed what sort of support that they required from the libraries and librarians advised what sort of services can be provided by the libraries. At the new era of information age, there are lot of challenges for Asian librarians to ponder how to provide quality services to our customers.
