AAS Conference and CEAL Annual Meeting

Amelia McKenzie attended the US Council of East Asian Libraries Annual Meeting in Chicago, followed by the Association for Asian Studies Annual Conference. Over 200 East Asian librarians attended the CEAL meetings, consisting of a plenary session and sessions presented by each of CEAL's subcommittees.

Wang Collection

Work continues on sorting and cataloguing the Wang Collection, a major donation received in October 2004 from the family of the late Sing-Wu (Sidney) Wang, formerly Chief Librarian of the National Library's Orientatlia Section from 1964 to 1985. [Editor's note: An obituary for Mr Wang, co-founder of EALRGA, appears elsewhere in this issue]

Chinese terracotta warrior

The Embassy of China in Canberra recently donated a full-size replica terracotta warrior to the National Library. It has been placed in the Asian Collections Reading Room. A ceremony was held on 15 March to mark the formal presentation of the statue to the Library. The Ambassador Mme Fu Ying made the presentation to the National Library's Director-general, Jan Fullerton, and spoke about the value of libraries to individuals and the goodwill between the Embassy and the National Library. She also presented a handsone book gift. The Library made a book gift in return and displayed a selection of books from Mongolia (the Ambassador’s home province). There was some media coverage of the event and a number of visitors appeared in the Asian Collections Reading Room in the following days to view the warrior.
